The idea behind this painting is to convey the essence of Bali through my own emotional perception. I depicted a Balinese man as a symbol of joy and optimism in everyday life. His smile and the “thumbs‑up” gesture, illuminated by the motorcycle’s headlight, reflect confidence, inner strength, and a positive outlook on the future despite daily challenges. With this gesture, he seems to share his happiness with those around him.
Life in Bali is modest, and people do not strive for rapid technological progress. At the same time, there is a sense that they are spiritually more grounded than those living in northern regions: they have found their own form of Zen and live in the present moment — freely, calmly, without stress, and without rushing anywhere. Yet the island depends heavily on tourism; it is well known that during the pandemic, when borders were closed, many local businesses nearly went bankrupt.
This raises a question: is the young man’s smile truly sincere, or is it shaped by the expectations of tourist culture? One wants to believe it is genuine.
